Dental Sealants
Molars have deep grooves, which allow bacteria to hide and cause decay on teeth surfaces. By applying dental sealants to protect molar and premolar chewing surfaces from decay, we can greatly reduce your susceptibility to cavities. The American Dental Association recognizes dental sealants as a key means of cavity prevention.
Made of a thin plastic film, dental sealants are applied by Dr. Grinaldi's and Dr. Fendley's hygienists. First, we identify and fill tooth decay, then we prepare teeth with a cleaning and etching solution. After about 15 seconds, we thoroughly rinse the solution, dry the surface, coat teeth with sealant, and harden it with a curing light. The entire procedure is not only painless, but fast, requiring between 10 and 45 minutes, depending on the number of teeth we're sealing.
Properly applied, dental sealants create an impenetrable physical barrier for small food particles and cavity-causing bacteria, making them nearly 100 percent effective in preventing tooth surface decay and the resulting cavities. Unbroken, they last between five and ten years. Although most insurance companies only cover sealant procedures at a minimal level, more companies recognize this technique's value as a preventive measure that will help reduce future dental costs and the need for restorative procedures. Originally, dental sealants were placed only on children’s teeth but we’ve had great success sealing teeth for adults.
